Our Wilderness Wall Tent , constructed with a Water and Mildew treated 10.1 oz. Marine Grade Army Duck Double-Fill Canvas , has more reinforcements and standard features than any tent on the market. We also have Fire treated tents available. 5′ Sidewalls – A full 5′ sidewall provides much more headroom within your tent. Double Layer of Canvas on Ridge – Reinforces tent ridge. This is very important when using a lodge pole frame. A wall tent roof will tear or rip easily if the lodge pole is not smooth when the pole is being pushed through the ridge poles openings. Reinforced Eaves with Webbing – Our reinforced eaves have 2 black webbing that runs the entire length of the eave. Steel D-Rings Along Eaves – The d-rings are featured every 3′. This is a much stronger system than tents with metal grommets pressed into the eaves. D-rings cannot pop out, grommets can. Front Zippered Door – Features a YKK #10 zipper, the highest quality heavy duty zipper made. Free Back Door – With this tent you receive an additional door on the back of your tent which mirrors the front door. Storm Flap on Door. This is an 8 canvas flap with buckles that protects the zippers on your door. The storm flap helps keep the wind out of your tent and protects your zipper from snow and ice. Vinyl Sod Cloth. 10 vinyl sod cloth is sewn into the base of the walls and doors. This acts as an air seal, allows your canvas to be up off the ground, and prevents water from wicking up the canvas wall. Stove Jack – Located in the front left corner of the tent (30″ front from door, 30″ up roof slope), the stove jack comes in a 5″ diameter but also has a stitched in pattern to allow for cutting to a 6″ opening. Nylon Loops at Base of Sidewalls and Doors – These loops, which are featured every 3′, allow you to stake your walls and doors down to keep them held taut. 200′ of Poly Rope and 20 Tensioners – Used to guy your tent out. These will be rolled up in the middle of your tent. Canvas Tent Bag – An oversized bag for storing your tent. This will be rolled up in the middle of your tent. Fire treatment disallows the spread of an open flame. This feature is highly recommended if you are using a stove within your tent. Screen doors are th full width of the tent and allow you to open your canvas doors to allow for airflow while keeping the bugs out. 2 Side Windows. 1 – 30 x 30 screened window on each side of tent. Ur tents are made of 12.63 ounce Sunforger, which is 100% cotton material, which is mildew, water, and fire resistant material, including all straps and stake loops. This 12.63 ounce material is thicker than other Sunforger material (such as the 10.10 ounce) and will last longer and hold up to the elements better than the lighter material. All our line is made of sisal and/or hemp rope and the entire tipi is made of natural materials. It is washable and can be placed directly into a washing machine. This twelve-foot diameter tipi can be used for wilderness camping, but would also work best as a back yard sleepover, side corner in a bedroom, or comfy-corner for an elementary classroom. North Prairie tipi uses industrial sewing machines to easily handle the thickest and most durable material. Note Also: We often have backorders. What is a Lavvu? The Lavvu is a temporary dwelling used by the Sami people (also spelled “Saami”, but derogatorily known as’Lapps’ or’Laplanders’) of northern Scandinavia and the Nenets and Khants of northern Russia. Its simplicity enabled the Sami to move quickly with their semi-domesticated reindeer herds at a moment’s notice. This structure enabled the indigenous cultures of the treeless plains of northern Scandinavia and the High Arctic of Eurasia to live in harmony with nature. Although the Lavvu can be easily confused with the Native American Tipi. It’s not a Tipi! The differences between the two structures are reflected in their respective environments and cultures. The lavvu is normally smaller and can be set up by only one person. Being more centered to the ground, the Lavvu is also better able to endure the fierce winds of the Scandinavian tundra, thus a more stable structure. Few structures used by indigenous peoples, with the exception of the Inuit (Eskimo) Igloo, are as stable in strong winds. What are the materials in this lavvu? This lavvu is made of a cotton Duck fabric, which is a natural, untreated material. This material is made of 10.10 ounce Cotton Duck fabric, which is a common and natural material. Most tipis in North America are made of the material and, with proper care, will last for many years to come. The disadvantage with cotton duck over Sunforger is that it is not mold or mildew, or water resistant, so special care must be used to air out the lavvu, which is easy to do when set up. If you wish something more mildew resistant, please check out our Sunforger lavvu items. Sunforger has been used for many years in other tent structures such as tipis, and it has been used very useful for lavvus that will be set up for over the entire season and/or in wet environments. There is little difference in fire resistance between cotton duck and Sunforger material. This fabric is most recommended for the following conditions. A If your lavvu will be set up for a longer period of time in one place, such as over the season; or… B If you live in a damp/wet environment such as east of the Mississippi River or along the Pacific Northwest. What does the lavvu look like? Lavvu, meaning that there are other tents out there that claim to have a’lavvu’, but are something very different. A traditional lavvu is not made of synthetic materials, which means you can have a fire inside without the worry of plastic melting or fire hazards. The material is made of 12 ounce Sunforger cotton duck that is naturally fire resistant. There is no center pole in the lavvu so that you can have a campfire inside to cook, or to keep warm in winter or summer. This lavvu is fifteen feet in diameter and about twelve feet high. It can sleep ten to twelve people very comfortably with or without a fire inside. There is a smoke hole at the top to let smoke rise out of the lavvu and during set-up, can be made small enough to keep rain or snow out. There is an attached door, a carrying bag, and a thirty-plus page booklet that describes everything you need to know about the lavvu. Similar to a Native American Teepee, there are no guy-wires or ropes to worry about as with other tents. This fifteen foot lavvu can be set up by one person in about twenty minutes and taken down in half that, with the total weight of about 55 pounds. Unlike the tipi, a Lavvu dose not need any stakes! No stakes are need for the lavvu. Because of the lower angle of the tent wall, the wind tends to push the lavvu into the ground, rather than pushing it over. The tipi requires stakes to be pounded into the ground, as the wind will tend to blow it over. IMPORTANT – The door color for this lavvu will come in the standard natural off-white, the same color as the fabric color. Are poles needed for the lavvu? Yes, poles will be needed for your lavvu, but here you have some options. You can either, cut down your own poles from the forest or make your own from a lumber yard. The Lavvu is a temporary dwelling used by the Sami people (also spelled “Saami”, but derogatorily known as’Lapps’ or’Laplanders’) of northern Scandinavia and the Nenets and Khants of northern Russia. Its simplicity enabled the Sami to move quickly with their semi-domesticated reindeer herds at a moment’s notice. This structure enabled the indigenous cultures of the treeless plains of northern Scandinavia and the High Arctic of Eurasia to live in harmony with nature. Although the Lavvu can be easily confused with the Native American Tipi. It’s not a Tipi! The differences between the two structures are reflected in their respective environments and cultures. The lavvu is normally smaller and can be set up by only one person. Being more centered to the ground, the Lavvu is also better able to endure the fierce winds of the Scandinavian tundra, thus a more stable structure. Few structures used by indigenous peoples, with the exception of the Inuit (Eskimo) Igloo, are as stable in strong winds. What are the materials in this lavvu? This lavvu is made of 12 ounce Cotton Duck fabric, which is a common and natural material used for tents and shelters. Many tipis in North America are made of this material and it will last for many years with proper care. Cotton duck is moderately water resistant and is a good fire resistance material. However, Cotton Duck has poor resistance against mold and mildew, and should be air or machine dried before packing away. Cotton duck is not recommended is you plan to keep your lavvu out over the season. If you plan to do this, please look at our other material for lavvus, Sunforger. In the official terminology, Sunforger is called a marine grade, boat shrunk, mildew resistant, flame retardant, and water repellent. Our Sunforger fabric meets CPAI-84 requirements for flame retardantcy of the State of California (which US material manufacturers use as the industry standard). Cotton Duck is a natural alternative camping material for the pure naturalist, and has been used for centuries by many different cultures. What does the lavvu look like? This lavvu is twelve feet/3.6 meter in diameter, about ten feet/3 meter high and can sleep four people very comfortably with a fire inside, or five people without the fire. There is a smoke hole at the top to let smoke rise out of the lavvu and during set-up, can be made small enough to keep rain or snow out. There is an attached door, a carrying bag, and a thirty-plus page booklet that describes everything you need to know about the lavvu. Similar to a Native American Teepee, there are no guy-wires or ropes to worry about as with other tents. Lavvu, meaning that there are other tents out there that claim to have a’lavvu’, but are something very different. Our traditional lavvus are not made of synthetic materials – you can have a fire inside without the worry of polyester melting or fire hazards. There is no center pole in a real lavvu , which means the interior has more open space so that you can have a campfire inside to cook or keep warm – in winter or summer. The lavvu can be set up quickly by one person in less than ten minutes and taken down in half that, with the total weight for this 12 foot/3.6 meter lavvu at about 35 pounds. Unlike the tipi, a Lavvu dose not need any stakes! No stakes are need for the lavvu. Because of the lower angle of the tent wall, the wind tends to push the lavvu into the ground, rather than pushing it over. The tipi requires stakes to be pounded into the ground, as the wind will tend to blow it over. Our tents are made of 100% cotton, including all straps and stake loops. All our line is made of sisal and/or hemp rope and the entire tipi is made of natural materials. It is washable and can be placed directly into a washing machine. This ten foot diameter tipi. North prairie tipi uses industrial sewing machines to easily handle the thickest and most durable material. Our tipi fabric are not a simple bed sheet, but durable cotton duck that is roughly the same thickness as regular denim jeans. The seams that connect the fabric panels are the same ‘lap stitch’ used on the inseam or out-seam on most denim jeans: high quality, fray resistant, lapped in a way to shed water off the tipi, rather than working it’s way inside the tipi.
