It has been several years since I last had this tent out of it’s sack. I wondered what I would find, given its age. I’m still shaking my head as I write this, but I guess my closet must apparently have been traveling at light speed, since, this tent has not aged a day in 5 years. Actually it almost hasn’t aged a day since I bought it on clearance in 1998 at MEC in Ottawa. I have always heard of the legendary quality and longevity of the Moss tent fabrics, that’s why I bought it, but who could have guessed a tent could remain in such excellent condition for so long. The polyurethane is, really, like new. Flexible, fully adhered and intact, but not dried nor sticky. The fabrics are in perfect shape. And it is still the beautiful, brilliant, crazy strong tent I remember. Whoever gets this one, is getting a rare treasure. I bought the tent when I was helping with an annual gathering at Grandfather William Commanda’s in Maniwaki Quebec. I used it for three years there, and probably on only one or two other trips since I’ve had it. EVERYONE loved this tent, and I always had visitors. It’s magical inside: laying on one’s back and looking up you see a red 4-lobed star, or flower effect, with a screened window in the center. It has two doors and one window taking up an entire side. All mesh can be covered up with nylon zipped coverings, making this one snug 4 season tent. The tent body is set up with 4 identical Easton poles, and there are a total of 12 pole crossings. The benefit of this showed up one day when it was pitched on a hill above the lake, and a thunderstorm came off the lake with winds gusting to better than 70 miles per hour. A bunch of us watched, captivated, as the wind gusts literally FLATTENED every tent but one. This tent was sort of shivering, in winds that had all others flat on the ground. It has a strong, full-coverage fly with a hooped vestibule. I used to feel when sleeping inside that if the world ended outside, I might not wake up. It would make an amazing base camp tent. For those who are not too familiar with Moss tents, the fabric is mainly what makes them special. They’re made of several different weights and types of nylon, but are unusual because the waterproof coating on the fly and floor is thicker than normal, is on the outside of the fly instead of inside, and is impregnated with sunscreen to protect the fabric. Also the designs and construction are among the very best ever made anywhere. This tent was made in Seattle, one of the last years that Moss tents were still made with the great old fabrics in the USA. MSR acquired Edgeworks in 2000 or 2001 I think, and they changed the fabrics to polyester and had the tents made in China. Condition-wise, as mentioned, the fabrics are amazingly still excellent and ready for your next trip. The only sign of age I could find is some tarnishing on the brass grommets. In a few places on the tent fabric, there are little brown rings where it was in contact with grommets. Those are faint and none of the rings showed up well in the pics I took, but they’re there, just a few of them and faint. Two of the black zipper pulls came off over the years and and while those can easily be replaced, I just replaced them with a loop of cord: see the photo of them. The original guylines were repurposed and have disappeared but this comes with some high quality replacements that I THINK! Or, you can use the original Moss aluminum guy tensioners that do come with (I always used rolling hitches instead of tensioners that tend to loosen). Given that this tent un-guyed stood up to hurricane force winds with almost no deflection, I can’t imagine what it could withstand if fully guyed. The dimensions in the spec sheet are a little inflated. The floor is listed as 7′ 6″ x 7′ 6″, but I find it’s just a hair over 7 feet when set up. The floor is a bathtub style with the peripheral seams held a few inches above the ground. So, the floor of the tent is a 7-foot square, with chamfered corners. Between the angled corners, the longest edge on the periphery is 64 inches. In other words, a 64″x84″ rectangle could fit on the floor either front-to-back or side-to-side, with almost a foot on either side. Or put another way, a 72″ square could fit inside with about 6″ all around it. Peak height is between 43-44 measured at the peak pole crossings. The top of the triangular side window (the mid-level pole crossings) is 3 feet. The hooped vestibule is about 14 sq ft. Weight of tent, fly, poles, stakes and all sacks is 12.8 lbs. I found the original stakes to be too soft to bother with – they easily bent. I replaced them with four Black Diamond/Chouinard T-skates made of 7075-T6 aluminum (heat-treated alloy, those are ridiculously bomber) and 9 groundhog-style aircraft aluminum alloy stakes that are quite strong and light. I’m including an MSR Little Dipper ground sheet with this. That is a later, made-in-China groundsheet, made of polyurethane coated polyester fabric. The seam tape is dried, cracked and coming off in a few places. And it has some dark stains. But it’s the perfect size for the tent, is still perfectly usable, and you could seam seal it if desired. It weighs 1 lb 1.1 oz. 4 main tent poles, little peak pole, vestibule hoop pole. 4 Black Diamond/Chouinard T-stakes and 9 aircraft aluminum stakes. Original aluminum guy tensioners, replacement guy cords, original pole repair sleeve. Original tent sack, pole sack and stake sack. Zpacks Altaplex Tent (NEW/ UNSUSED/ PERFECT CONDITION). I set up the tent one time indoors just to see what it looked like. I loved it but I simply don’t need as much space as it provides! Sets up with a single trekking pole adjusted to around 56″-60″ (142-152 cm). If your trekking poles do not extended to 56 (142cm), you can add one of our. To increase the height or considering using one of our. Sets up with a minimum of 6 stakes but 10 stakes are recommended in windy conditions. The storm doors can be opened or closed independently. Leave one or two doors open in nice weather for a breeze and great views. Close the upwind door to block cold wind, or close both for 360° rain protection. The overlapping doors are closed with custom made metal hooks, with a toggle at the center to keep them pinned. The canopy overhangs the bathtub floor and the screen doors by 4-5 inches (12 cm). In calm rain or under dripping trees the doors can be left open for air flow without water dripping on the floor space. In almost all conditions, at least one downwind door can be left open for air. For even better rain protection with a door open, use the included elastic cords to pull the screen door back away from the rain spray as seen in the photo gallery. A single closed door creates enough vestibule space for storing a wet backpack or muddy shoes, if you don’t want to bring them into the tent. There is screen between the bathtub floor and the walls around the perimeter. An elastic cord keeps the bathtub elevated, ensuring the screen slopes downwards away from the bathtub. Any condensation, which single wall shelters may experience, will run down the walls and out through the downward sloping screen, rather than onto the floor. For tips to avoid condensation. A rainbow zipper gives you extra space to get in or out of the tent and gives you access to the vestibule area. The doorway is tall for easy entry. This tent has a solid, sewn in 8 inch (20 cm) tall bathtub floor. The bathtub floor is 36 inches (91 cm) wide. The floor is 7.5 feet (2.3 meters) long. There is plenty of space to stretch out, with room for your gear beside you or at the ends of the floor. A Mesh pocket is conveniently located near the door so that it can be accessed from inside or outside the tent. The pocket is about 8″ x 8″ (20 cm x 20 cm). A separate groundsheet is not required for this shelter. The floor material is reasonably durable, and all Dyneema® Composite Fabric gear can be easily patched in the field with repair tape. If you do prefer to use a groundsheet as a precaution, Flat Groundsheets. All of our tents do pretty well in the wind. 60 mph (100 km/h) gusts are no problem. The material can handle high wind loads, and as long as your stakes stay in the ground (use rocks if available) your tent will stay standing. Dyneema® Composite Fabric is not particularly noisy, however almost any tent will make a little noise in the wind. Earplugs are not a bad idea for windy nights. This tent rolls up to about 6″ x 12″ (15 x 30 cm). It is a loose fit in an included Medium-Plus size stuff sack which is 7″ x 13″ (18 x 33 cm). Z Packs Solplex Tent. This is the precursor to the current Z Packs Plexamid tent. It’s a hybrid tent with mesh to keep the bugs out with a single wall construction. It’s made of DCF, commonly called Cuben fibre and is incredibly light as you can see in the photos: 449g with the tent bag and 540g with the poles added. It’s been well used but is in excellent condition, apart from the tent bag, which has a number of small holes in it, and one of the rubber ends to the small pole is missing. Does not come with pegs, of which it requires 6. The poles are Z Packs carbon 32″ and 48″. Poles pack to 12 in length, which is ideal if you are worried about pole storage. It’s a bombproof set up with a really high bathtub floor. Super light and packable. You can of course use trekking poles instead of the supplied carbon poles. It’s never let any rain in, even in a storm. Few tents out there as light and well regarded as this one. Im a TNF collector some of you may know from the old website thenorthfaceguru. Sadly, the time has come to close out my The North Face collection and here we are offering a middle-generation Stratos tent in great condition. Today Im listing a second generation Stratos tent. What can be said about the Stratos tent that hasnt already been said? Not much, but first what has been said about it? One only need search for and read the rave reviews! No leaks or wear visible after 18 years, 2-3 trips per year. Baking hot, snow, hiking, car booting, campsite, wild camping… All accomplished with ease. I have used several other types of mid-sized tents, and the Stratos beat them all hands down. These are only a small sample of the reviews and all are real reviews from real people on real websites. As for myself, I echo those sentiments and more. Personally, I was camping (with a different Stratos) on a very crowded Anini Beach (on the north shore of Kauai) when a 50+MPH gale blew for over 3 days. When the wind died down, literally the only tent left standing in the entire state park was my Stratos. I have also personally have used a Stratos tent (not this specific one) multiple times over 10,000 feet and well below 0°F. Having owned multiple tents over the years, this is without question, by far , the best of the best mid-size tents ever made. Bar none it is unrivaled in its class. I absolutely love this tent and will certainly be keeping one from my collection for personal use. No collection could be complete without a Stratos. It is truly a ground breaking tent. While this is not technically part of The North Faces Expedition line of tents, it absolutely could be. The Stratos employs an square floor plan and if the 3 pole pattern looks familiar its because the pattern developed for the Stratos is so sturdy, so strong, so stable, has been used many times since on many later models. One of the key reasons many collectors consider the 1st and 2nd generation Stratos tents Expedition grade is because of the rain fly. The Stratos has a tight pitch and the rainfly comes with internal buckles (3) and Velcro attachment points (6) to secure it snugly to the tent for added strength and stability in extreme weather. See the insets in picture #5 for more detail on these very useful buckles which were dropped on later generations of the Stratos and are not included on other non-expedition tents. Plus, it has a zippered roof panel which is a great sky light window with extra ventilation on warm nights, or it can zip closed to convert the tent to true 4-season capability. This 2nd generation Stratos is 8 feet wide and almost 7 feet deep (larger than later generations), yet weighs just under 9.5 pounds with its full-coverage flysheet. Its two wide doors not only provide easy ingress and egress, they provide for wide viewing of the great outdoors as well as bountiful ventilation. Also, the zipper path is perfectly aligned to provide even load and stress along the full zipper path. Add to all of this an. The dual wide doors maximize access to the vestibules as well as the interior of this completely stormproof 3-4 season shelter. The North Faces most highly sought after mid-size tent, the Stratos has an especially tight pitch, a well sloped profile, and a wide base that allows it to withstand heavy snow loading and high winds. The Stratos is genuinely comfortable in camp grounds or up in the back country. This example is in used but well cared for excellent condition There is normally expected usage wear but this specific tent is barely used. The seam tape is in great condition. There are no holes in either of the mesh doors or the mesh sky light. All zippers work perfectly. The poles are all straight, all the tips are in place and the elastic is all good. The only condition notation to make is the original owner wrote on the stuff sack and poll back with black marker (as shown in picture #10). This is a VERY SOLID TENT that is ideally suited for spring, summer, fall and winter use. Perfect for car camping and for backpacking (especially if you have 2 or 3 people to split the load). Once again, this is a RARE tent, much less in this condition coming from a collector who has cared for it properly. Minimum Weight: 9 lb. Floor Area: 53.3 sq. Floor Dimensions: 96 in. Sorry for bad photos, if it stops raining I’ll put it up in the garden and get some better ones. Bought new by me, u. Sed about 5 times and always put-away clean and dry. Great condition with no obvious wear. I just re-proofed it. The additional (Berghaus) carpet has a pulled eyelet and is muddy but works perfectly. It has protected the sewn in ground sheet very well. One air beam has a slow leak but a new (boxed) replacement is included. One of the fibre glass poles that supports the shade over the door way has a crack in the end but still perfectly useable. Includes all accessories, pump, repair patches, bag etc. This is an excellent quality tent, it has never leaked and really enjoy using it but giving an expedition trailer a go. Hilleberg Nammatj 2 – Four Season Backpacking Tent. Condition is “Used” but in very good condition. No rips, tears, etc. It does have signs of use like dust on the outside and some bits of dirt here and there that I couldn’t clean out. I’ve only used it a few times. I thought I was going to do more backpacking but I don’t have the time. This is a really nice tent, It is a Coleman American Heritage canvas tent. This tent is in excellent condition for its age. It was stored properly there is no odor at all. Apparently this tent was minimally used and well taken care of. There are no holes in the mosquito netting and all the zippers work perfectly. The only issue that I can see is some stains on the canopy and some areas around the outside. View the pictures and judge for yourself. Excellent Condition Zpacks Altaplex Ultralight Tent, 2020 model. Condition is “Excellent Condition”. I bought this tent for the 2020 hiking season to take on the PCT. I started in early March, before covid, & stayed off trail since then. I babies this tent. No patches, no holes, like new! Always pitched on soft ground with tyvek groundsheet. This tent is absolutely fantastic & will come in original stuff sack. Survived 4 hailstorms, snow, & heavy rain during its time with me. This is my 4th zpacks tarp/tent (also owned a duplex, hexamid pocket tar modified, hexamid pocket tarp with doors). None of them have failed me EVER & I have only gotten smaller shelters over the years. I might actually be a complete fool by giving up such an incredible tent at such a bargain price.
