For sale is one Bibler Fitzroy tent, poles, stakes, and optional vestibule. Made in SLC, UT, USA. Never used, and properly stored in a large, breathable storage sack, in a clean, dust-free, non-smoking, climate controlled environment. Main photo of the tent set up was pulled from the internet. In an effort to maintain its pristine condition, I chose not to set it up outside on my drought stricken “lawn”. And I simply don’t have the floor space for its erection inside. I took it in to Black Diamond to assess its fitness for duty and they checked the fabric, seams, guyline anchors, reinforced the Twistlok pole ties, and completely replaced all pole sets. I was pleasantly surprised at the stellar customer service, especially on a 25 year old product. It’s now good to go. If you’re not already familiar with Bibler shelters, save yourself the time and read no further. Unless you’re just interested in picking up an iconic piece of climbing history, this is likely not the tent for you. But if you’re merely somewhat familiar but unsure of the details, here’s a primer: Climbing veteran of tall mountains, Todd Bibler began designing and sewing specialized, single wall tents in 1977, out of Boulder CO. Eventually, BD dropped the Bibler branding and at some point, as with seemingly everything these days, moved manufacturing to Asia. If you want specifications, hit the BDEL website. The only difference in the current Fitzroy and this 1998 model is the label, the country of origin, and perhaps some minute qualitative difference. And this one’s actually available, while current production is out of stock. There’s a time and a place in the outdoors for everything from 6 oz, ultralight tarps to heavy, 60 lb canvas wall tents that accommodate wood burning stoves. Then there’s specialized, 6 lb, light yet strong, high mountain bunkers that provide a safe haven to wait out unrelenting storms. This is that kind of tent. After all these years, its strength to weight ratio remains unparalleled. Big mountains make their own weather and it’s nearly always bad. The kind of bad that’s rough on equipment and rougher on souls. This is the Fitzroy’s domain and where it earned its peerless reputation. You can count on one human hand how many commercially available shelters do well in such an environment. The Fitzroy’s robust stormworthiness is legendary. There are numerous accounts of lesser tents collapsing under heavy snow loads, tattered to shreds or simply ripped off the mountain by the ferocious winds that typify a high mountain environment (think Andes, Denali). Once the wind finds its way under the rain fly and catches like a parachute behind a top fuel dragster, things quickly degrade from there. This shelter, being single walled, was designed without a fly, so there’s no pole sleeves, extraneous fabric, hooks or other miscellanea for the wind to catch, flap, flop and subsequently destroy. Made from a burly waterproof/breathable PTFE fabric, and erected with the aluminum poles on the inside, the material becomes incredibly taut and aerodynamic; wind spills over and around this tent. With four main poles that intersect seven times, coupled with the drum tight skin, wet, heavy snow is simply not a problem. If you need shelter for high altitude endeavors in the alpine, (type 2.5-3 fun) you’d be hard pressed to find one better suited to the task. Details: Twistlok Pole Ties, light reflecting tie downs, interior mesh pockets, adjustable vents, fully taped seams, bright yellow exterior for visibility, fuzzy golden interior makes even stormy days appear sunny. Floor: 70d Nylon Taffeta /1.5 mil polyurethane film laminate. 340 diameter Easton aluminum poles, Silicon dipped YKK coil zipper w/ nickel plated sliders, #69 Nylon rot proof thread. An added bonus, this particular tent is not treated with flame retardant. This item is in the category “Sporting Goods\Camping & Hiking\Tents & Canopies\Tents”.
